From the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) an important email to send immediately!

The ivory poaching crisis continues with no signs of relief. Huge losses continue in Kenya, Tanzania, Cameroon, Chad, Gabon and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Poaching has become highly sophisticated with large scale slaughters assisted by helicopters, AK47’s, night vision equipment and syndicated gangs. “The illegal ivory trade bears all the hallmarks of serious transnational organized crime!”

The USA and Peru have submitted a resolution to the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) to expand the work of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in addressing illicit trafficking in protected species of wild fauna and flora (view the draft resolution via

The Commission meets in Vienna from April 22-26, 2013. PLEASE send a short, respectful email (example below) asking your government to support this resolution! Find email addresses for your Member States of the CCPCJ at

Dear (fill in your country’s CCPCJ Minister from above)

I am deeply concerned about the burgeoning illicit trafficking in endangered species, such as the African Elephant. Illicit wildlife trafficking has become increasingly organized and sophisticated threatening global security and stability. Transnational organized crime and corruption, as witnessed in the illegal ivory trade, is destroying local economies, natural habitats, iconic wildlife, tourism and the very fabric of civilized society. Not only are critically endangered species being exterminated, but human lives are being lost. Please support the resolution submitted by the USA and Peru expanding the work of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime to include illicit trafficking in protected species of wild fauna and flora.
